What happens during a typical indoor class?

Each indoor session follows a structured format designed to maximise development whilst keeping training engaging and fun:

Warm-Up (10-15 mins) Dynamic movements and activation exercises to prepare the body for sprint work, building mobility and reducing injury risk.

Technical Drills (15-20 mins) Focused work on running mechanics arm action, posture, foot placement, and acceleration technique. We break down the fundamentals of sprinting into manageable skills that athletes can master progressively.

Speed Development (20-25 mins) Sprint specific training including acceleration work, maximum velocity running, and reaction drills. Athletes work on starts, short sprints, and building explosive power appropriate to their age and ability level.

Cool-Down & Reflection (5-10 mins) Stretching and recovery work, plus time to discuss progress, answer questions, and set goals for the next session.

Throughout the class, coaches provide individual feedback and encouragement, ensuring every athlete understands their progression and feels supported in their development. Indoor facilities allow us to maintain consistent, high-quality training regardless of weather conditions.

What happens during a typical outdoor class?

Each outdoor session takes full advantage of track facilities to develop speed and athletic performance:

Warm-Up (10-15 mins) Dynamic warm up on the track, incorporating movement patterns and drills that prepare athletes for outdoor sprint training.

Technical Drills (15-20 mins) Running mechanics work using the full track environment perfecting sprint technique, stride patterns, and body positioning. The outdoor space allows for longer technical runs and more varied drill work.

Speed & Track Work (20-25 mins) Sprint training on proper athletics tracks, including block starts (for older/experienced athletes), acceleration phases, flying sprints, and bend running. Athletes experience racing positions and distances used in competitive athletics, building familiarity with track environments. Work may include distances from 30m up to 150m depending on age and ability.

Cool-Down & Reflection (5-10 mins) Recovery work including jogging, stretching, and group discussion about performance and progress.

Outdoor sessions provide the authentic track experience, helping athletes transition towards club athletics or competitive opportunities. Weather permitting, the outdoor environment offers ideal conditions for developing maximum speed and experiencing real athletics training.

How long do classes last? How often are they?

Classes currently run for 1 hour per session (we’re working on extending session times to provide even more training opportunity in the future).

Sessions operate weekly throughout school term time, giving athletes consistent, regular training that builds progressive development. This weekly structure allows young people to embed proper technique, track their improvement, and build the habits needed for long-term athletic success.

Term time scheduling ensures training fits around school commitments whilst maintaining the frequency needed for genuine progression. Athletes can attend their local venue session each week, with some choosing to attend multiple venues for additional training opportunities.

What ages do you work with? Are the classes different depending on the age?

We work with young people aged 6-18 years. Some classes are specifically for ages 6-11 only this will be clearly marked on each individual class listing so you can find the right session for your child.

Age and Ability Grouping:

Within sessions, we split athletes into groups based on age or ability to ensure everyone receives appropriate coaching and challenge. This means:

  • Younger or newer athletes work on fundamental movement skills and basic sprint technique
  • More experienced or older athletes progress to advanced mechanics and competitive preparation
  • Everyone trains in an environment suited to their current level, ensuring optimal development and confidence

Grouping by ability (rather than age alone) means athletes are challenged appropriately regardless of when they started training, creating a supportive environment where progression feels achievable and every young person can thrive.

For how long should my child take these classes?

As long as possible. Athletic development is a long term journey, not a quick fix.

Even after mastering proper technique, there’s always opportunity to get faster and stronger. Speed development doesn’t stop once you’ve learned the fundamentals it’s about continuous progression, building power, refining efficiency, and adapting to your growing body.

With how competitive sport is currently, training alongside the best is how you improve. Regular sessions create an environment where athletes push each other, learn from one another, and raise their standards together. The longer young people stay in quality coaching environments, the more they develop not just physically, but mentally building resilience, work ethic, and competitive confidence.

Whether your child’s goal is to excel in school sports, join an athletics club, compete at county or national level, or simply stay active and healthy consistent, long term training is what creates lasting results. The athletes who commit to regular sessions over months and years are the ones who unlock their true potential.

What sports is speed training useful for?

All sports benefit from speed training. Whether your child plays football, rugby, cricket, netball, hockey, tennis, or any other sport being faster gives them a competitive edge.

Direct Benefits For:

  • Football Beating opponents to the ball, explosive acceleration, quick directional changes
  • Rugby Breaking tackles, covering ground in attack and defence, support running
  • Cricket Quick singles, explosive fielding, fast bowling run-ups
  • Netball Getting free from defenders, closing down space, explosive jumping
  • Hockey Speed on the break, defensive recovery, creating attacking opportunities
  • Tennis Court coverage, explosive first steps, reaction speed

Universal Athletic Skills:

Speed training develops fundamental movement patterns that underpin every sport:

  • Acceleration and deceleration
  • Change of direction
  • Reaction time and decision making speed
  • Body control and coordination
  • Power generation

Even sports not traditionally seen as “sprint sports” swimming, cycling, martial arts benefit from the explosive power, body awareness, and athletic foundation that sprint training builds.

The reality: in competitive youth sport today, being faster makes you better. Our training gives young athletes the physical tools to excel in whatever sport they choose, whilst building the foundation for long term athletic development.

How fit does my child need to be? How fit does my child need to be?

No minimum fitness level required. Our classes welcome complete beginners through to experienced athletes everyone starts somewhere.

Important to understand: fitness isn’t speed, but speed training improves fitness. Your child doesn’t need to be “fit” to start sprint training. In fact, structured speed work is one of the most effective ways to build fitness, because it develops:

  • Cardiovascular capacity through high intensity intervals
  • Muscular strength and power
  • Anaerobic conditioning
  • Movement efficiency that makes all physical activity easier
Are beginners welcome?

Absolutely. We welcome complete beginners with no prior athletics experience in fact, many of our most successful athletes started with us knowing nothing about sprinting.

Every elite athlete started somewhere, and we believe quality coaching should be accessible from day one. Our sessions are specifically designed to accommodate beginners alongside more experienced athletes through our age and ability grouping system. This means:

  • No pressure or expectations children learn at their own pace in a supportive environment
  • Foundational skills first we teach proper technique from scratch, building solid movement patterns
  • Progressive development athletes advance when they’re ready, not on a fixed timeline
  • Confidence building beginners often make the fastest progress, which builds incredible self-belief

Starting early with proper coaching is actually an advantage. Children who learn correct technique from the beginning avoid developing bad habits that are harder to fix later. They build a strong athletic foundation that serves them across all sports and physical activities.

Whether your child has never set foot on a track or is already showing promise, our coaches will meet them where they are and help them progress. The only requirement is a willingness to learn and try their best.

What should my child bring to the class?

Essential kit:

  • Sportswear comfortable athletic clothing suitable for running (shorts/leggings and t-shirt/training top)
  • Trainers proper sports trainers with good support (running or cross training shoes work well)

Weather considerations:

If it’s cold or wet, we’ll move sessions indoors, so your child should be prepared for both environments:

  • Layers for outdoor sessions (tracksuit top/jacket they can remove)
  • Indoor appropriate footwear (clean trainers for indoor facilities)

Optional extras:

  • Water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Light jacket or hoodie for warm ups and cool downs

What NOT to bring:

  • Spikes (not necessary at this level)
  • Jewellery (should be removed for safety)
  • Heavy or restrictive clothing

We keep kit requirements simple and affordable no specialist equipment needed. Just comfortable clothes they can move freely in and trainers that support their feet. Everything else, we provide.

Should parents stay for the class?

It’s entirely up to you. Parents are welcome to stay and watch, or you can drop off and collect your child whichever works best for your family.

If you choose to stay:

  • Watch your child’s progress and see their development first hand
  • Most of our venues offerWiFi and drinks, so you can catch up on work, relax with a coffee, or connect with other parents
  • Comfortable viewing areas allow you to observe sessions without disrupting training

If you prefer to drop off:

  • Use the hour for errands, appointments, or personal time
  • Your child will be safely supervised by qualified coaches throughout the session
  • We’ll ensure they’re ready for collection at the end

Either way works for us. Some parents enjoy watching their child’s athletic journey unfold, whilst others appreciate the flexibility to manage their schedule. Many families find a mix works best staying occasionally to see progress, dropping off other times.

The most important thing is that your child attends consistently and enjoys their training. How you manage that hour is completely your choice.

What qualifications/certificates do your coaches have?

Our coaches are among the most highly qualified in youth athletics.

Minimum qualifications:

  • UK Athletics (UKA) coaching badges  all coaches hold official athletics coaching qualifications recognized by the sport’s national governing body
  • These certifications ensure coaches understand proper technique, age appropriate training, safeguarding, and athlete development principles

Advanced qualifications: Many of our coaching team also hold:

  • Master’s degrees in Sports Coaching providing deep theoretical understanding of coaching pedagogy, athlete development, and sports science
  • PhDs in sports related fields some coaches bring doctoral level expertise in areas like biomechanics, coaching practice, or youth development

What this means for your child:

You’re not just getting someone who can run drills you’re accessing coaches who understand:

  • The science behind speed development
  • How young people learn and progress
  • Evidence based coaching methods that actually work
  • Long term athlete development pathways

We believe every child deserves expert coaching, not just those who can afford elite private training. Our coaches’ qualifications ensure your child receives the same quality of instruction that develops academy and scholarship athletes accessible through affordable community sessions.

Can disabled children take part?

Yes. We welcome disabled children and have successfully integrated them into our sessions in the past.

Our approach:

Sessions are adaptable to accommodate different needs and abilities. We’ve worked with children with various disabilities and adjusted our coaching to ensure they can participate meaningfully and progress alongside their peers.

How we support inclusion:

  • Coaches assess individual needs and adapt drills, distances, or intensity accordingly
  • Age and ability grouping means disabled children train in environments suited to their current level
  • Focus on personal progress rather than comparison with others
  • Modified activities that maintain the core benefits of sprint training whilst being accessible

Before joining:

We recommend contacting us to discuss your child’s specific needs so we can:

  • Ensure we can provide appropriate support
  • Make any necessary adaptations to the session
  • Discuss what to expect and how we’ll work together
  • Answer any questions about accessibility at each venue

Our commitment:

Every child deserves access to quality athletics coaching. We’re experienced in making adjustments to include disabled children whilst maintaining high quality training for all participants. If we can support your child’s participation safely and effectively, we will.

It's raining/snowing will the class still be on?

Yes, classes run in almost all weather conditions. Because we have indoor facilities at all our venues, rain, cold, or light snow won’t stop training we simply move sessions inside.

Indoor facilities mean:

  • No cancelled sessions due to typical British weather
  • Consistent training year round
  • Your child’s development continues regardless of conditions
  • Warm, dry environments for winter training

Extreme weather exceptions:

In heavy snow or severe weather conditions, sessions may be cancelled if:

  • The venue closes due to safety concerns
  • Roads are unsafe for travel
  • Conditions make it dangerous to attend

How you’ll know: We’ll notify you as early as possible if a session needs to be cancelled due to extreme weather, allowing you to adjust your plans.

The bottom line: Rain won’t stop us. Cold won’t stop us. Light snow won’t stop us. Our indoor facilities mean your child gets consistent, uninterrupted training throughout the year. Only genuinely dangerous conditions (heavy snowfall, venue closures) would cancel a session and that’s rare.

My child needs a personal coach, do you offer that?

Yes. We offer one to one personal coaching for athletes who need more individualised attention or have specific development goals.

All our coaches are available for personal coaching sessions, bringing the same high level qualifications (UKA badges, Master’s degrees, PhDs) to individualised training.

Personal coaching is ideal for:

  • Athletes preparing for specific competitions or trials
  • Young people working towards academy or scholarship opportunities
  • Children who need additional technical work on specific areas
  • Athletes who benefit from more focused, individual attention
  • Preparation for county, regional, or national level competition

What personal coaching includes:

  • Fully customised training programmes tailored to your child’s goals
  • One to one attention throughout the entire session
  • Detailed technical analysis and feedback
  • Flexible scheduling to fit your family’s needs
  • Accelerated development through individualised focus

Getting started:

Contact us to discuss your child’s needs, goals, and which coach would be the best fit. We’ll arrange an initial consultation to create a personalised training plan and discuss scheduling and pricing.

Whether your child needs extra support to catch up, wants to accelerate their development, or is pursuing competitive athletics seriously our expert coaches can provide the individual attention that makes the difference.

As a charity, what makes Speed For Sport different?

Our mission is access, not profit. Every decision we make is about creating opportunities for children who wouldn’t otherwise have them not about maximizing revenue.

What this means in practice:

Subsidized memberships: We deliberately keep costs low (£36/month) so athletics coaching is affordable for families from all backgrounds. Commercial clubs often charge double or triple this amount we believe talent shouldn’t be limited by your postcode or your parents’ income.

Creating pathways, not just sessions: We don’t just teach children to run fast we build pathways from sport to college, university, and professional opportunities. Our success stories include children from disadvantaged backgrounds:

  • Getting into athletics academies
  • Earning college scholarships
  • Joining professional development programmes
  • Building the confidence to pursue their potential

Expert coaching for everyone: As a charity, we invest in highly qualified coaches (UKA badges, Master’s degrees, PhDs) and make their expertise accessible at community prices. Quality coaching shouldn’t be reserved for the privileged few.

Addressing inequality: Sport is increasingly pricing out working class families. We exist to challenge that ensuring children from disadvantaged areas get the same opportunities as those from wealthy backgrounds. We measure success not in profit, but in lives changed and potential unlocked.

Building more than athletes: We help young people develop confidence, discipline, and the ability to present themselves professionally skills that open doors far beyond the track.

The bottom line: Commercial clubs exist to make money. We exist to break down barriers and create opportunities. Every pound goes back into developing young athletes who deserve a chance.
